Regionals went well. We did worse than at the SUN tournament, but it was really fun. We finished with a 3-3 record, so it went well!! I did impromptu, which also went well, and placed 6th. Which is good. I can't wait till next year. Debate camp is also in two weeks, which I am incredibly excited about. I will try to put the lessons from camp up on this blog, if I can, so keep looking. As of now, we will be starting up again in the fall. Exact date to be announced. There is also a Communicators for Christ conference in Rochester, NY in October. More information will be posted later. We are expanding this year to include IE's (individual events: speeches) and LD (Lincoln-Douglas Debate). If you have any questions on that, please let me now. Most of you know how to reach me. If not, just leave a comment. As most of you know, I will be going to regionals May 1-3 (Monday - Wednesday) in Clarks Summit, PA. There are 7 seats in our car (four are currently reserved for Mommy, me, KK, and Tai). Any girls who would like to come and do not mind sleeping on the floor at our host housing are welcome to come watch. We do have a place to stay for free, so anyone who comes will just have to bring food for themselves (or money for food) and chip in for gas. We will be leaving from my house on Sunday (April 30) and anyone who wants to come is welcome to come home with us from church after the New Members luncheon. For those of you who aren't coming, I would just ask that you pray for us as we go for safe travel, God's blessing, and that we would seek only to glorify God in everything that we do from timing to judging to talking to debating to just being there. Below is the schedule. If you would like to come, please give me a call. Y'all know the number! If anyone has a laptop and/or a movie that you would all want to watch, let me know about that too.
ttyl, whitney

Region 10 Regional Speech The Massachusetts tournament was really fun. It was also kind of cool to debate with someone I have never met before too! We qualified for Regionals with a 3-3, but lost to Grant/Sayre again! :) Regionals is May 1-3. I will be there in Impromptu and Team Policy Debate. Grace and Foster Evans (the team from Syracuse that I rode with and whom some of you may have met) finished 2nd. They were excited.

This was a really good learning experience. I learned more of what to do and what not to do. One thing that I would impact to those of you who are going to debate next year is that you have to be polite in CX. We saw a lot of really rude teams. The idea with these debate and speech tournaments is to really glorify God and learn how to communicate. Speeding and being rude accomplishes neither goal.

Often times, we can get sidetracked (even in speech) and think that its all about the winning. I know I can get very competitive and seek to rely on my own strength in some of these rounds. To succeed in debate, speech, and life, we need to rely on God's strength and not our own. When we consecrate the round and the tournament to God and compete for His glory, then win or lose, we have succeeded.

I can present more details in Cross Examination. ;)

TTYL, whitney

SUNny Tournament in Massachusetts

I will be going to the SUN tournament in MA. We had a lot of fun and funny conversations that could only come from spending too much time together while totally nervous! Drew and I won two rounds (both on Neg) which is not enough to boost us into Regionals (that takes three) but we hope to qualify this next tournament. We actually debated the Second-place champion in our first round!

While we did not win a medal or a trophy (we didn't even break into the outrounds) we did win in that we had a great learning experience. Now we at least know what a tournament is like!

It was exhausting. Not only were we a bit nervous the entire weekend, but we had to run from round to round, building to building. It wasn't that bad for Drew and I, but Mommy had to go all over the campus (Baptist Bible College) in high-heel shoes 'cause she was the judge. Then she got up at 5 o'clock every morning! (round of applause).

We are looking forward to Western PA tournament and seeing people again. We will be meeting at This Warm House on Wednesday, April 5 at 3:00-3:30. Tai, I believe that we can pick you up. Drew, could you please bring a snack?
Another thought... It will be a 4 1/2 hour trip (that's like going from Corning to Philly) so we may want entertainment. Narnia comes out on video tomorrow (Tuesday) and I was thinking... I know Drew has a laptop and I think Tai has one too. (I have one that doesn't play dvd's :'( We could watch Narnia on the way down!!!! That would be fun. And if anyone's batteries run low. Syracuse has told me that they still have a slot open for their team policy debate. Massachusetts is still open for registration. Both cost $30/person ($60/team) but one is a lot closer than they other! We (Karina and I) will not be able to go to Syracuse, which means we can't drive... (I think Mrs. Wilber said Mattea and Drew couldn't go either) Which means, if the Efthimious want to make that their tournament, they can. I can register you guys if you like. That tournament will be March30-April 1. Host housing is available. They do request that you bring a judge (I'm not sure if you have to bring a timer) so whoever drives could do that. Just an open option. At this point, no one is going to MA (unless Drew and I completely blow Clarks Summit which we're praying doesn't happen and then we might consider it). You can register on their website: www.phc.edu It will be open to anyone age 14-18. I would highly recommend it especially if you want to go to Patrick Henry College in the future. For anyone (except for Drew) if you would like to room with me, then upon registration, when you get your confirmation call, say so. I will be going and will be able to possibly provide transportation.
Rachael and I went last year and it was a blast. I know I personally learned a lot and grew a lot in faith from going. God really met me there and I learned how to debate.
There are two tracks running, Advanced and Novice. (Drew, for you I would recommed Advanced) We went over most of the Novice information in our meetings. I would recommend going to the Novice if you have not competed at all this season. Below is the information as is found on the website. There are two discounts available. Bye

Debate-->
June 11-24 · $995 · Rachel WilliamsPHC Debater & Assistant Coach, Former NCFCA Debater, Former Competitor in National Parliamentary Debate Association
In today’s society, it is important to be able to effectively and convincingly communicate your beliefs. Academic debate provides an instructive forum for developing communication and critical thinking skills that will help you defend your beliefs with sound, coherent arguments. During this fun-filled two-week camp, you will practice debating, hear lectures, and spend time researching the 2006-2007 topic of the National Christian Forensics & Communication Association (NCFCA). Classes will emphasize debate theory, case construction, refutation, and strategy. In small "lab" groups, you will work closely with other campers and a lab group leader while discussing case ideas and conducting research using some of the college’s best academic databases and research sources. To aid in this research, a computer will be provided for every debater. At the end of two weeks, the camp will host a tournament, giving you the opportunity to test your debate skills and knowledge. While debate experience is not required and a novice track will be provided, this camp will be rigorous.

SUN Massachusetts Tournament

Hi Everybody, I have the information on the SUN Massachusetts Tournament. It will be held in Bolton, MA on April 20-22. Here's the deal. It is the last tournament before regionals. Thus, it is your last chance to compete in this season! Which means, Anna and Daniel and Mattea and Karina, you need to either register for this one or wait for the next season. Registration is by mail and opens on Monday, March 20, unless you've already registered for another tournament and then it is Tuesday, March 21. If you guys don't decide to go, Drew and I won't go either.
Bolton is about 45 minutes away from Cassie and Jesse's old church. We will probably go there on the Sunday following the tournament instead of making the 6 hour long trip back on a Saturday night. Also, fun, fun, fun, Cassie and Jesse might come with us as judges. Stress the word might. I need to know, hopefully by tomorrow, who is coming and who is not.
Price: It is $30 per person ($60 per team) for the Team Policy Debate. IE's are an additional cost, but I am not sure how much. Each team is required to bring a judge but we don't need to bring timers because we are from out of state!! But, if we want to bring someone to time (Tai and maybe Mickaela) we can. (Is Mikaela ten yet?) Host Housing is available, but we will also seek to possibly stay with a church family. Mommy is willing to drive if we all pitch in for gas; however, our car only seats six passengers. If we have too many people we will either need a bigger car or more cars. E-mail me if you have any questions. Also, the website for the tournament is www.xanga.com/JOC_SUN
And that's all I have to say about that!
Bye

Western PA tournament Host Housing

To Drew and Tai,
We have host-housing for the Western PA tournament in Butler, PA on April 6-8. Happy research!!!

Hi, Welcome to the official Corning Debate Club Blog!
